US President elect Trump stated on December 22 that it is "absolutely necessary" for the United States to have Greenland.
On the same day, Trump posted on social media announcing the nomination of Ken Howery as the US Ambassador to Denmark. He also wrote, "For the purposes of national security and global freedom, the United States believes that it is absolutely necessary for (the United States) to own and control Greenland
During Trump's previous presidency, American media revealed that he had consulted advisors multiple times about whether the United States could purchase Greenland. In August 2019, Trump himself confirmed to the media his intention to purchase the island, and Danish Prime Minister Fredrickson immediately stated that the US idea was "absurd". The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Greenland Autonomous Government also posted on social media, clearly stating that Greenland "does not sell to the outside world".
Greenland is located in the northeast of North America and is the world's largest island. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark with a high degree of autonomy. Defense and foreign affairs are managed by the Danish government, and the island is rich in rare earth and other resources.
