On Friday local time, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the United States, Tesla announced a recall of 3878 2024 electric pickup trucks, Cybertruck, due to the possibility of accidental acceleration caused by the vehicle's accelerator pedal sticking, increasing the risk of collision. Before the US stock market, Tesla's stock price fell nearly 3% at one point.
NHTSA stated that Tesla's after-sales service department will replace or repair the accelerator pedal assembly free of charge, and car owners will be notified of this recall campaign by mail in June.
Tesla CEO Musk responded on social media that Tesla is "very cautious" when dealing with this issue. In addition, Tesla reported to NHTSA that they were not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
The company claimed to have received a customer's accelerator pedal malfunction report for the first time on March 31, followed by a second malfunction report on April 3. After conducting a series of tests, the company decided to recall on April 12th.
In addition to replacing or repairing all existing Cybertruck accelerator pedals, Tesla has also informed NHTSA that they have started producing Cybertruck using new accelerator pedals.
This indicates that Tesla is taking proactive measures to address potential issues with the accelerator pedal, including not only vehicles that have already been delivered to consumers, but also those that are in transit or have arrived at delivery centers but have not yet been delivered. Through these measures, Tesla aims to ensure that all Cybertruck vehicles are safe and reliable when handed over to consumers.
It is reported that Truss launched three recalls in the first quarter of 2024, affecting about 2.4 million vehicles, including Cybertruck.
However, most issues related to Tesla recalls are usually resolved through in flight software updates (OTAs). This means that Tesla can directly send software updates to vehicles via the Internet, without requiring the owner to send the vehicle to the service center for physical inspection or repair.
Tesla, this uniquely designed electric pickup truck, was officially launched in November last year. Previously, due to production issues and tight battery supply, the launch date of Cybertruck had been continuously postponed.
At present, the sales of Cybertruck remain a mystery, and Tesla may release its production and delivery status in this year's first quarter financial report.
Musk had previously predicted that Tesla would need 12 to 18 months to begin mass production of Cybertruck made of stainless steel. At the same time, he also reminded that Cybertruck's annual production is unlikely to reach 250000 vehicles before 2025, but its order volume has already exceeded 2 million.
This week, there were reports that Tesla has delayed the delivery date of this electric pickup truck, but the reason has not been explained, and the number of affected buyers cannot be determined at present.
It is currently unclear what caused the delay in delivery. But at least one Cybertruck owner said on social media that his accelerator pedal had stuck when a panel on the pedal came off.
