Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry, Som Pakash, stated on December 13th that the Indian government is currently not considering reducing import taxes on electric vehicles. This position of the Indian government may delay Tesla's plan to enter the Indian market.
Pakash stated that the "Made in India" policy promoted by the Indian government aims to encourage domestic and foreign companies to invest in the electric vehicle industry. The Indian government has launched a $3.1 billion incentive plan in 2021 to promote local production of electric vehicles. In addition, the Indian government is providing incentives to companies hoping to produce batteries in India under a $2 billion plan.
